UK announces £500m+ air defence package for Ukraine
Defence Secretary John Healey unveiled a defence support initiative valued at over half a billion pounds on 12 February while co-chairing NATO's 33rd Ukraine Defence Contact Group in Brussels. The allocation comprises £150 million directed towards the NATO Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List-marking the UK's initial contribution-alongside a £390 million acquisition of 1,000 Lightweight Multirole Missiles from Thales Belfast. Additional deliveries of air defence and artillery ammunition will follow through the Air Defence Consortium. For the UK complex-weapons supply chain, the Thales Belfast workshare and the Air Defence Consortium route are the openings to qualify against, with stock replenishment the demand signal to track.
UK spending over £400m on long-range weapons this year - The Ministry of Defence announced on 13 February that precision and hypersonic weapons expenditure will surpass £400 million this fiscal year. Britain leads the Stratus programme with France and Italy to develop a replacement system, supporting 1,300 positions. A fresh joint development phase with Germany examining deep precision strike capabilities is commencing. Defence Secretary Healey addressed industrial partnerships at the Munich Security Conference.
Carrier Strike Group to deploy to North Atlantic under Operation Firecrest - Prime Minister Starmer announced on 14 February that HMS Prince of Wales will command a Carrier Strike Group deployment to the North Atlantic and High North during 2026. The operation will function under NATO's Arctic Sentry mission framework, with HMS Dragon directing NATO's Standing Naval Maritime Group 1 throughout the year. The MOD referenced a 30% escalation in Russian naval activity proximate to UK waters during the preceding two years.
Commons debates Palantir contract amid transparency concerns - Parliament examined the £240 million MOD contract awarded directly to Palantir in December 2025, raising questions regarding competitive procurement procedures and connections to former US ambassador Peter Mandelson. The three-year agreement encompasses data analytics spanning defence operations. Minister for the Armed Forces Al Carns acknowledged the Defence Secretary made the decision unilaterally, justified by defence and security exemptions.

£12m hypersonic missile contract awarded to Amentum UK
On 13 February, the MOD awarded a £12 million contract to Warrington-based Amentum UK, partnering with SMEs Ebeni and Synthetik, to expedite sovereign hypersonic missile development. The contract was granted 31 days after the tender invitation. Since July 2024, the programme has distributed 22 contracts totalling £48 million, with over 50% benefiting SMEs - a live market-entry lane for specialist suppliers to qualify against on genuine capability fit. The aim targets a weapons system demonstrator by decade's end.

Indian Air Force instructors to train RAF fast jet pilots at Valley
The UK and India reached agreement on 12 February to station three Indian Air Force Qualified Flying Instructors at RAF Valley for the first time, instructing on Hawk T2 or Texan T1 aircraft across two years. This milestone means all three British military academies now host Indian instructors. The arrangement may address persistent bottlenecks in fast jet pilot throughput.
Defence Secretary visits Camp Viking, Norway - John Healey visited the UK's Arctic operations hub at Øverbygd on 11 February during Royal Marines training, confirming the UK will increase troop presence in Norway from 1,000 to 2,000 and participate in NATO's Arctic Sentry mission.

Project Nightfall deadline passed - development contracts expected March
The submission deadline for Project Nightfall proposals concluded on 9 February. Three industry consortiums are anticipated to receive £9 million development contracts in March, each delivering three missiles within 12 months for testing. The ground-launched ballistic missile requirement specifies 500km+ range, 200kg warhead capacity, and operation capability in high-electronic-warfare environments.
International
Royal Marines conduct Arctic mortar drills ahead of Cold Response 26
Royal Marines executed live 81mm mortar exercises near Moen, exceeding 200 miles within the Arctic Circle, on 11 February. These exercises prepare forces for Exercise Cold Response 26 (9-19 March)-NATO's premier Arctic exercise this year, assembling 25,000 personnel from 14 nations. Exercise Lion Protector, directed by the UK's Joint Expeditionary Force, will follow in September.
